Typically, a suit to establish paternity is a legal tool used to determine the biological father of a child, usually for the purpose of seeking child support (link to my child support page). These lawsuits typically occur when there is a need to determine the actual father. This usually happens when a child is born out of wedlock. Several issues can factor in a paternity suit such as DNA testing, surrogate parents, egg and sperm donors, and procedures involving artificial insemination.
